Connection is an album by trumpeter/bandleader Don Ellis recorded in and released on the Columbia label. The album features big band arrangements of pop hits of the day along with Ellis' "Theme from The French Connection" which won him a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement in Genre: Jazz.

This album definitely has its high points: Ellis's composition "Theme from The French Connection," a nice rendition of the rock hit "Roundabout," and Hank Levy's composition "Chain Reaction." However, much of the album shows the Ellis band succumbing to the "jazz rock" fad of the early s, during which most of the popular big bands felt /5(12).

Don Ellis' Connection, issued in , was a brazen attempt at swinging for the chart asberoldrolrida.inmanmubanddurluaholtersbertiternigh.co of the tunes selected come right from the pop vernacular of the day. They range from a barnburning read of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's theme for "Jesus Christ Superstar" and a dirty funk approach to Carole King's "I Feel the Earth Move" to a provocative and spacy cover of Procol Harum's.

Ellis accepted the project and wrote the music to be performed by his own Orchestra. Ellis later won a Grammy for this project ("Best Instrumental Arrangement"), and was asked to write the music to the film's sequel, French Connection II in Ellis's final album for Columbia, Connection.

There is not a lot here that is uniquely Don, and if he was trying for mass appeal after the sucess of the film French Connection, he was over reaching--what Carpenter's fan in Ohio is going to buy a Don Ellis album to hear him cover "Superstar," and what fan of At Monteray in New York is going to by an album WHERE he covers "Superstar?".
